T113DVD The Bern-Loetschberg-Simplon (1989) Railway DVD
T113DVD
Cutting at the heart of the towering Bernese Alps, the famed private standard gauge Bern Loetschberg Simplon railway allows a direct and scenic connection from the northern Swiss finantial and industrial centers to the Italian frontier exiting the long Simplon tunnel. From Thun and Interlaken, two branch lines converge at Spietz, where the BLS main trunk commences its southward course from the charming Thunersee shores to Frutigen on the picturesque Kandertal basin. Here begins a steep mountain section at a severe 2.7 percent gradient hilighted by spectacular reversing loops, separate track levels and incredible viaducts over the rugged valley ravines, reaching the mouth of the 14.6 kilometer Loetschberg tunnel at Kandesteg. Exiting at Goppenstein, the BLS railway descends dramatically on the vertiginous ramp high on the Rhone valley, again employing ambitious viaducts and artifacts as it finally reaches Brig and the Federal SBB line to the Simplon tunnel and Domodossola. This highly artistic and informative documentary examines in detail this renowned railway in its breathtaking Alpine surroundings, and additionally focuses on the soon to be retired maroon fleet of BLS first and second generation electric locomotives that gave this remarkable mountain railway a distinctive class of its own. English, 110 MN full color. NTSC USA/CANADA/JAPAN standard.
